Where does Sierra Nevada’s milk come from, and what does Graziers mean?

Sierra Nevada Cheese Company sources its milk from local, family-operated dairies in Northern California. Our cows are primarily pasture-raised, following a rotational grazing system. "Graziers" refers to cows that graze on high-quality grass as part of our sustainable, rotational grazing system to promote animal health and environmental stewardship. Both the cows and goats are given supplemental feed, but the majority of their diet comes from a mixture of fresh pasture grass and hay.

What is the difference between Graziers and Organic?

  • Graziers cows are pasture-raised with some supplemental Non-GMO grain, primarily fed fresh grass and hay. Our Graziers pastures are not sprayed with synthetic chemicals or pesticides. While they are not certified organic, the pastures are organically managed, meaning the farmers use sustainable, natural methods to maintain healthy pastureland.
  • Organic cows graze on certified organic pasture grasses and consume organic feed, following strict organic farming standards.

What do the goats eat, and do they have any special care?

Our goats are grazed seasonally on specially planted, irrigated pastures and supplemented with non-GMO hay and grain. The majority of their diet comes from a mixture of fresh pasture grass and hay. Goats are natural browsers, meaning they prefer to eat shrubs, bushes, leaves, and other plant materials in addition to grass. Their diet is carefully formulated by a dairy nutritionist to ensure their health.

How does Sierra Nevada Cheese work with generational farms?

At Sierra Nevada Cheese Company, we are proud to work with local, generational farms that have been in operation for many years. By selling value-added products, we can pay these farms a premium price for their milk, moving away from commodity milk pricing. This allows us to sustain family farms for future generations while supporting their continued growth and success. With every purchase, you’re helping to sustain these family-owned farms, ensuring that the hard work of local farmers can continue to thrive.

Are your products gluten-free?

Yes, all Sierra Nevada Cheese products are gluten-free.

Are your products Kosher?

Yes, all our products are certified Kosher.

Are your products free from antibiotics and hormones?

Yes, all products are free from added hormones and antibiotics.

What kind of rennet do you use?

We use a vegetable enzyme derived from the fungi Rhizomucor miehei. This enzyme is commonly used in cheese-making and is approved for organic certification. It’s not derived from GMOs and is used in both our organic and non-organic cheeses.

Can I freeze your products?

While we do not recommend freezing our products, as they already have a long shelf life and freezing can change the texture, many of our customers do freeze our products. Please note that freezing may affect the texture, but the nutritional benefits and taste remain largely intact. To preserve the best quality, it’s recommended to consume products within their shelf life.
